USS Midway Foundation receives $3 million grant for Freedom Park at Burnham Navy Pier

Corporate and civic leaders stand with a giant check during Tuesday s announcement Photo courtesy of Cox Communications The USS Midway Foundation has been awarded a million grant from the James M Cox Foundation to backing rise of Freedom Park at Burnham Navy Pier including the creation of the Barbara Cox Promenade Located at the west end of the pier the Promenade will feature a multi-figure bronze monument honoring military facility members and their families it was communicated Tuesday at a check presentation ceremony Central to the display will be a statue of Barbara Cox who christened the USS Midway in as a young Navy widow Barbara Cox represented the sacrifice of so a great number of military families USS Midway Foundation President Laura White disclosed She went on to live a life of organization through the company and her own ethos It s truly an honor to have her story and the Cox partnership represented in Freedom Park Freedom Park set to become the largest veterans memorial park on the West Coast will offer visitors a mix of waterfront beauty immersive storytelling and interactive exhibits to honor America s military history Freedom Park at Burnham Navy Pier is more than just a new inhabitants space it s a landmark that honors our veterans tells the story of function and sacrifice and reinforces San Diego s identity as a proud military town Mayor Todd Gloria explained In honor of National Volunteer Month Cox Communications employees also participated in a yellow ribbon-tying activity aboard the USS Midway Museum commemorating the th anniversary of Operation Frequent Wind With this latest gift Cox Communications total patronage for the USS Midway now approaches million reflecting a -year partnership that includes funding for educational programs and employee volunteer efforts
